Marvin Kay, a loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on Sunday at the age of 99. A successful businessman, Marvin led Kay Chesterfield Manufacturing Company and Kay Furniture, a prominent furniture manufacturing and upholstery business based in Oakland, for over 40 years.
Born in Hollywood, California, Marvin moved to Oakland at the age of six and graduated from Oakland High School. He was a devoted husband to Lois (Bernstein), who passed away in 2016. Throughout his life, Marvin lived in several East Bay cities, including Oakland, Alameda, San Leandro, Piedmont, and Lafayette.
In addition to his business achievements, Marvin was a dedicated volunteer with the Red Cross, where he applied his expertise in disaster communications. He was also an avid Amateur Radio Operator (K6GHE), a member of the Masons, and a congregant of Temple Sinai.
Marvin, renowned for his kindness, is survived by his son, Douglas, son Gary and daughter-in-law, Melissa; two granddaughters, Shara Kay and Julia Gimovsky; their husbands, Charles Katz and Matthew Gimovsky; and his six great-grandchildren: Nora, Ben, Jake, Kezia, Willa, and Henry.
