Green Burial
“For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” – Genesis 3:19
Standard burial rituals within Jewish communities have been considered both organic (without use of chemicals) and ecologically observant (green) for 3,000+ years. SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPEL CHEVRA KADISHA has prioritized this naturally environmentally
conscience tradition since we began operations over 120 years ago. Honoring this natural and traditional process ultimately creates a green conservation burial site, but we take it one step further. In 2022, we dedicated a specific section within Eternal
Home Cemetery called Gan Adamah (“Earth Garden”). This exclusive space is designed with the Jewish value שְׁמִירַת הָאֲדָמָה (“Shmi-rat ha-a-da-mah” caring for the earth) as central to our thinking. Only biodegradable caskets and shrouds are allowed within each space and
no concrete liners are used. Our Jewish tradition’s founding ancestor, Abraham, paved the way for what we think of as traditional Jewish burial. Today, we continue this same tradition and call it green.
