Susan C. May died peacefully on November 14, 2024.
Susan was a third-generation San Franciscan, the loving daughter of Reynold and Marjorie Colvin who gave her the moniker "The Perfect Child." Susan had a wonderful marriage for over 40 years with Robert M. (Bob) May, Jr., who died in 2017. Bob was a true raconteur who endlessly entertained Susan through travel, writing, inquisitiveness, theater attendance, and good times. Susan is survived by, and will be very much missed by, her brother and sister-in-law, Andy and Suzy Colvin. She was the adoring and beloved "Ant Soo" to Mathew and Jessica and their children Lev and Shai, and to Michael and Jess. She is also survived and fondly remembered by her many cousins, extended family and those who thought of her as family.
Susan received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and earned her Masters of Social Work from Smith College. Susan spent the majority of her career advocating for the rights of children and their families as a Social Worker for the County of San Mateo in Children's Protective Services.
An avid reader of Jane Austin and Agatha Christie, she always found delight in a good story told well. She would often do the same from her own life, making the simple the extraordinary.
Susan made and retained close relationships with her colleagues from the County. As fellow Social Workers, they connected deeply through their work and built meaningful friendships that lasted long past her retirement. She was a faithful exerciser with the "Yoga Ladies" and a devoted member of several book clubs.
Susan was a lifelong and grateful member of Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco and a committed supporter and volunteer for the Peninsula Jewish Community Center, where she helped many seniors "Get Up and Go." For many years, the PJCC was a second home for her and Bob, where they became beloved fixtures.
Susan's family wishes to express great appreciation to both Agnes Mabalot and to the staff of Coming Home Hospice, who each provided Susan with compassionate care and comfort as her life drew to a close.
A Memorial Service is planned for Tuesday November 19 at noon at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco. A shiva minyan will be hosted by her family on the evening of Wednesday November 20th in San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, Susan may be remembered with a donation to Congregation Emanu-El or to the Peninsula Jewish Community Center.
