November 19, 1938 - July 27, 2024
Our beloved dad, David Allen Resnik, passed away peacefully at age 85 on July 27, 2024.
David was born in Utica, NY and spent his early life moving with his family to numerous parts of the country, including Omaha, Portland (Maine), St. Paul, and Chicago. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in Chicago in 1956. Despite his many fond memories of living in colder climates, including sledding down the hill to East End Beach in Portland and playing pond hockey in St. Paul, David passed on a scholarship to the University of Chicago to enroll at the California Institute of Technology in sunny Pasadena, California. He never looked back, spending the next 67 years living in southern California before moving to San Jose to be closer to his daughter, Sarah, and her family.
David graduated from Cal Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Math and Physics. He developed an interest in what was then the nascent field of computer science, and he leveraged his brilliant mind and genial personality to build a successful career in technical sales.
When visiting his parents in Buffalo, David was introduced to a young physician, Anne Herzog. They married in 1967, were together for 27 years, and raised two children, Sarah and Josh. Their marriage ended in divorce, after which David met Joyce Volk, and he and Joyce shared the next 27 years together until Joyce passed in 2023.
In his retirement years, David especially enjoyed tutoring many grateful students (including a number of his grandchildren) in a variety of subjects. David, like his father, was a gifted teacher who could tutor just about any subject, and make it fun and engaging along the way.
David will be remembered for his love of learning, his kind and caring nature, and his infectious sense of humor. In addition to the people in his life, David also had special love for UCLA basketball, golf, and sweets (especially Jelly Belly candies). But most of all, David will be remembered as a wonderful dad, grandpa, brother, and friend.
David is survived by his loving children, Sarah (Ben) Cheyette and Josh (Dana) Resnik; his grandchildren, Madeleine, Natalie, Jonah, Lucas and Jackie; his devoted younger sister Naomi (who David also convinced to join him in sunny California); his ex-wife, Anne; as well as many other family and friends. David was predeceased by his parents, Reuben and Mollie Resnik, and his long-time partner, Joyce.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in David's memory to an educational foundation of your choice.
