Emil Meilech Knopf, 91, of San Francisco, CA, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024. Affectionately known as Uncle Emil, he is survived by his nieces, grand nieces, grand nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.

Emil was born on January 7, 1933 in Rzeszów, Poland. After the Nazis invaded, he survived by hiding in the forest with his mother and sister. From there, he emigrated to Bolivia and later settled in San Francisco.

At 19, Emil began a long career at Levi Strauss. He started as an errand runner and soon became the administrator of the Valencia Street factory. While continuing to work at Levi's, Emil enrolled in classes at San Francisco State University and the Salinger School of Design. By the late 1960's, he became the Chief Designer in the Youthwear Design Department.

Emil tirelessly worked to support the Jewish community and several charities. He served multiple terms as president of his B'nai B'rith lodge and Congregation Adath Israel. In retirement, Emil dedicated himself to fundraising for the American Heart Association.

Despite his many professional accomplishments, Emil was proudest of preserving Jewish traditions for multiple generations of his nieces and nephews. His family could always count on Emil's annual Hanukkah party to cement their lasting connection.

Services will be held at Eternal Home on Wednesday, July 3rd at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any one of the many organizations that Emil was involved with.
