Sheldon Harvey Wolfe

1933 – 2022

Sheldon Harvey Wolfe

Sheldon Harvey Wolfe was born to Dorothy and Robert Wolfe on June 25, 1933. He grew up in San Francisco, where he graduated from Lowell High School. He later attended UC Berkeley and rooted on those Bears for the rest of his life, attending countless Big Games that became a cherished family tradition. He served in the United States Navy for three years. On a fortuitous night off, he met the love of his life, Rhoda Levit, and they married in 1958. After the Navy, he attended Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding student, known for a mind as deep as he was tall.

After receiving his law degree, Sheldon and Rhoda moved to San Francisco, where he began his legal career at Pettit and Martin until the firm's closure. He later joined Steefel, Levitt & Weiss, which was absorbed by Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. Sheldon retired from Manatt at the age of 84. He loved his work and was deeply passionate about travel, learning, sports, and giving back to his beloved community.

Sheldon was deeply committed to strengthening the Jewish community and fostering bonds with the State of Israel, which he visited countless times. He was exceptionally generous with his time and resources and volunteered his leadership to many organizations, including The Marine Mammal Center, Guide Dogs for the Blind, the San Francisco Jewish Community Center, Jewish National Fund, and UC Hastings College of Law. He served as Board President of the Bay Area Council of Soviet Jewry, President of Congregation Sherith Israel, President of the Board of URJ Camp Swig, and Campaign Chair of the Jewish Federation.

Above all else, Sheldon cherished his family. He was the loving husband of 64 years to Rhoda Levit Wolfe, a devoted father to Rabbi Greg Wolfe (Julie Hochman) and Amy Wolfe, and a wonderful grandfather to Ariella Wolfe Maurer (Nick Maurer), Noah Wolfe, Maya Wolfe, and Jasper Wolfe. He was also deeply loved by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sally and Dr. Gil Gradinger, as well as his nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.

Sheldon passed away peacefully on September 2, 2022, surrounded by those he loved. He leaves behind an inspiring legacy, having touched innumerable lives with his humor, wisdom, work ethic, and passion for San Francisco sports teams. He will be remembered for his deep care for others and his commitment to making the world a better place.
