Funeral Home Administrator (Temporary)

Summary

Sinai Memorial Chapel Chevra Kadisha (Sinai) is a San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit funeral home and cemetery organization serving the Jewish community with several locations including Colma, Lafayette, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Oakland, and Briones. We are seeking an Administrator to support our Funeral Directors and staff in our San Francisco location.

Essential Job Purpose

Reporting to the Managing Funeral Director in the San Francisco office, this position supports Funeral Directors and staff and serves as the primary point of contact for families regarding mortuary services at Sinai’s San Francisco office. The role is responsible for the initial client intake process, gathering required information to initiate funeral arrangements and ensure a smooth transition to Funeral Directors for next steps.

Core Responsibilities

  • Answer phones and serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding mortuary services and arrangements, providing compassionate support while conducting initial intake on behalf of Funeral Directors by gathering all required information and documenting details for Funeral Director review and follow-up
  • Provide administrative and operational support to Funeral Directors and staff, coordinating schedules, logistics, and follow-ups to ensure smooth daily mortuary operations
  • Prepare and process legal and regulatory documentation in compliance with applicable requirements, including managing Death Certificate filings through California’s Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS)
  • Provide dedicated administrative support to the Managing Funeral Director, including coordination, documentation, and oversight of mortuary-related supply inventory and ordering
  • Maintain accurate case files and ensure timely data entry into internal systems
  • Provide backup support for front desk operations as needed
  • Work with physicians to finalize information on death certificates
  • Perform other administrative and operational support tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School degree or equivalent required; college degree is a plus
  • Minimum of 2 years of administrative or operations experience in a professional setting; prior experience in the funeral industry is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with families, staff, and external partners
  • Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint), with the ability to learn and adapt to database systems and other technology in a professional setting
  • EDRS (Electronic Death Registration System) certification preferred for filing and registering death certificates electronically with local government agencies (must be able to complete required 4-hour training if not currently certified)
  • Open to ongoing learning about the Funeral industry and Jewish burial traditions and practices

Expectations

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. without assistance.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment: desktop and laptop computers, mobile and landline phone systems, fax, copy, printing devices, and other communications devices.
  • Ability to deal with grief and grieving individuals with empathy and compassion.
  • Ability to physically navigate Sinai’s various funeral home and cemetery environments, including walking on various indoor and outdoor surfaces, including grass, gravel, climbing stairs, and using elevators
  • Absolute discretion and confidentiality with an attitude of attentiveness, respect, decorum, & solemnity

Compensation

The hourly range for this position is $25.00 to $28.00 per hour. This full-time, temporary role is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
