Sylvia Porton (née Klein), died on June 6, 2016 at the age of 102. She is survived by her son, Art Porton, daughter-in-law, Linda Richman, son-in-law Pat Maroney, her four grandchildren, Andrea and Michael Maroney and Adam and Allison Porton and her great-granddaughter, Claire Maroney. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Max Porton and her daughter, Judy Maroney
A native of Oakland, CA, Sylvia became a resident of Dinuba, CA, where her husband Max was a co-owner of the Dinuba Bargain House hardware store. The couple moved back to the Bay Area in 1971. Sylvia attended UC Berkeley and taught in the Munson-Sultana, Dinuba and Oakland public schools for over two decades.
Sylvia and Max were a founding family of what is now Congregation B'Nai David in Visalia, and she was an active lifetime member of Hadassah.
Sylvia cherished her family and her students and emphasized the importance of education, encouraging them to realize their potential.
Donations can be made in Sylvia's memory to the Reutlinger Center for Jewish Living in Danville, CA, where she was lovingly cared for by the staff for the past 15 years.
