It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis Sherman on November 26th, 2016. Phyllis was born to Muriel and David Ludmerer on April 24, 1928 in New York City. She was married to the late Milton Sherman. After earning a journalism degree from New York University (NYU), she lived much of her life in Hartford Connecticut where she raised her family and owned and operated the Sherman Nursery School. In the early 1980's she fulfilled her dream by moving west and relocated to San Francisco.

There was very little in life that Phyllis didn't enjoy. Her fondness of food, travel, theater and the game of scrabble were just a few of the many activities that drove her life's passions. As owner, publisher, and entertainment critic of the West of Twin Peaks Observer, her prolific writings were full of creativity and insight, and each one of her monthly columns would typically end with a personal end-note or humorous joke. Her publications have been read and enjoyed by much of San Francisco, particularly in the Noe Valley and West Portal communities.

After more than 20 years of newspaper ownership, she decided to sell the paper to travel the world. Along with 500 college undergraduate students, she soon departed as a senior "life-long learner" on a 100-day Semester at Sea educational program, cruising the world on the SS Universe, stopping at some 15 countries along the way. But retirement for Phyllis was not for long. She went back to her "day job" as entertainment editor of the Westside Observer (Phyllis's Findings") and continued to crank out monthly columns about almost anything the "great city" of San Francisco had to offer. As the years went on, her writings became less frequent, but her continued love of the news never waned. Until her death, she remained a voracious reader of three daily newspapers and several weekly magazines. She had a thirst for knowledge that would never quit.

She is survived by her two sons, Eric Sherman (Hope), Randy Sherman (Eileen), her sister Karen Cohose (Bruce). Affectionately known as "Bubbie" to her grandchildren, she also leaves behind Michael Sherman (Brooke), Stacy Brown (Alex), Justin and Marissa Sherman, as well as her great granddaughters, Raina and Riley Brown.
